Lois Volta, Confessions of a Cleaning Lady

  • Big Blue Marble Bookstore 551 Carpenter Lane Philadelphia, PA, 19119 United States (map)

Lois Volta’s new book, Confessions of a Cleaning Lady, is an experiential take on where home, theory, and feminism collide… with a little how-to as well. Lois is the owner of a feminist, eco-friendly cleaning company located in Northwest Philadelphia, and founder of the Volta Way: a domestic revolution focused on cleaning up messes (both literal and emotional) to create safe, sacred, loving places for everyone. To Lois, a home isn’t just a place we live — it’s a reflection of the way we move through the world.

Lois’s book features a mix of excerpts from her past advice column at Grid Magazine, tales from her ongoing radio show at The Everyday Feminist, and a how-to cleaning guide all written through a feminist, domestic theory lens. Illuminating how societal patterns and world issues are mirrored in the way we approach the small stuff, like doing the dishes or wiping down the bathroom sink. Discussing how the fabric of our relationships can be frayed or repaired with the housework we choose or refuse to do. Surmising that, similar to the way a butterfly can create a storm by flapping its wings, to practice feminism in the home is to take part in a community-quaking act of political resistance. Through Lois’s eyes, you are on your way to changing the world just by clearing your own clutter off the dining room table.
